10 Americans had a blood sample taken. 287 chemicals were found, 200 per person. * 28 waste by products * 47 consumer products ingredients (teflon, stainmaster, scotchguard, flame retardant, pesticides, etc) * 212 inducstrial chemicals and pesticides that were banned 30 years ago. 131 chemicals were associated with cancer 151 chemicals associated with birth defects 158 neurotoxins 154 hormone disruptors These 10 Americans were fetuses. Are the doses too small to matter? How small is too small? We're seeing major changes in diseases and health. *There has been a 62% increase in acute lymphocytic leukemia in children from '73-'99. *40% increase in childhood brain cancer from '73-'94 *7.3 million American couples have trouble becoming pregnant or going full term. A 20% increase in the last 10 years. *1 in 7 women get breast cancer. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will get cancer. No country has higher rates than the U.S.
The '76 Toxics Substances Control Act has gone 30 years without being updated. *It does not require health & safety studies for new chemicals. *62,000 chemicals were 'grandfathered' in and presumed safe. The EPA reviewed 200 of those 62,000. *80% of new chemicals are approved within 3 weeks *Only 5 chemicals have been banned or restricted. In 2004 600 million pounds of 650 pollutants were discharged into the air. 1000 contaminants were found in water utility and government tests. 1,050 additives from food packaging ended up in our food. There are 168 ingredients in 12 personal care products used by women, 85 ingredients in the 6 products used by men.
What Can We Do? * Eat Organic * Eat only Low-mercury fish * Use Cast-iron instead of teflon pans * Filter your tap water * Avoid 'fragrance', parabens, phthalates, BPA
