Lee DeWyze in the house!
Just a few months ago, Lee DeWyze was just another guy working his butt off to make it in the music business. He would take his guitar and play virtually anywhere for anyone. And every time he did, he impressed everyone who heard him. He has now made that same impression on all of America thanks to American Idol. Fans overlooked his lack of personality on camera because of his amazing talent on a microphone. (Although I talked to his sister and she said he is a total jokester! He would always make the family laugh. And when he first started singing for them, he would make them cover up their faces so they didn't look at him.)
When Lee came back home to Chicago with the American Idol cameras for his hometown visit, he had a LOT of people looking at him! This town went nuts. It started with his morning appearance on FOX TV across from our studios. As he worked his way across the street, I looked out the window from the 27th floor and all I could see was a mass of humanity moving together as one unit, following Lee.
When he made it into our studio, it was as if he was oblivious to the enormous "American Idol" entourage that came with him. Before the cameras came into the studio, it had to be cleared of any American Idol sponsor competitors. No Pepsi allowed! My iPhone sitting on the counter got 'cleared'. Wow.
I was most amused by Lee's bodyguard. He was treating Lee like he was the frickin' President of the United States. When we tried to get him to smile, he would have NONE of it. Seriously, dude...lighten up.
It was refreshing to see that Lee was pretty much taking this all in stride. He seemed a bit overwhelmed by it all, yet, he wasn't surprised. As anyone in a band can attest, there are always dreams of hitting it big. And boy did he. Regardless of whether he is crowned the American Idol champ this week, he is already a star with a life of rock n roll ahead of him. Good luck, Lee!
